Today I wanted to highlight an event happening in NYC next week. It's called the New Music Seminar and it's a gathering of thought leaders and music people with the goal of helping artists understand the new music business. And I have two free tickets to give away!

The New Music Seminar actually has been around for a while, but was reborn last year by Tom Silverman and Dave Lory with a series of one-day conferences in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. They were a huge success, and Tom and Dave have decided to change the format to a three-day event in NYC.

The Importance of the San Francisco MusicTech Summit

I finally registered for this summer's SF MusicTech Summit, which takes place in San Francisco on May 17. This day-long conference happens twice a year and it's an absolute must for anyone building meaningful products intended to move the music industry in a positive direction.

I wanted to write a quick note explaining why I think this event is so important.

I go to a lot of music conferences. Last fall I spoke at 6 or 7, including larger more widely known conferences like CMJ in New York. None, in my opinion, had the quality of both attendees and conversation, as SF MusicTech. Here's why I think their formula works:

Information Is Beautiful posted this great infographic about how much artists in the UK are making from different digital sales methods, and how many units they need to sell to earn a US monthly minimum wage of $1,160. How Much Do Music Artists Earn Online?

Recently, the UK government passed The Digital Economy Act which included many, perhaps draconian, measures to combat online music piracy (including withdrawing broadband access for persistent pirates).

Much was proclaimed about how these new laws would protect musicians and artists revenue and livelihoods.

But how much money do musicians really get paid in this new digital marketplace?
